How can emotionally focused couple therapy help you?

I admire emotionally focused couple therapy because it defines what love is and how to (re)create it. It is a research-based method where, with the help of a therapist, you can overcome repetitive conflicts and detachment. A supportive therapist helps you understand how you've reached the current situation. Then the focus moves towards mutual understanding and closeness. The goal is secure attachment, intimacy, and confidence for both partners.

What is love and secure attachment?

"Love is a secure emotional attachment between partners" (founder of attachment theory, J. Bowlby). Secure attachment means that your partner is there for you and offers support. If you have at least one person in the world you can rely on in times of need, your body calms down. In such a secure, peaceful, and nurtured feeling, it is easier to focus on other roles and tasks in life - such as being a parent or working. In attachment, the openness of your partner is also important: how willing they are to share their concerns, doubts, and fears with you. If yes, then you are like a rock or a steady support for them to lean on. "Love is a secure emotional connection between partners" (J. Bowlby).

If there is no sense of security on an emotional level - it's like reaching out for them, and they are not there. Your body may react to this with panic, but you may appear angry or withdrawn. The partner is likely to respond in a way that leads to even greater conflict or detachment. Thus, you find yourself in a recurring and frantic dance of arguments or detachment, which is hard to stop. And intimacy is so far away at that moment...
